Post-Surgical Shoulder Rehabilitation

Post-Surgical Shoulder Rehabilitation NYC Some shoulder conditions, such as rotator cuff injuries, require surgery. Even with a positive surgical outcome, recovery and post-surgery rehab can be slow and painful.

Patients can become frustrated with the lengthy and challenging physical therapy process and often resort to pain medication or pain injection therapy.

Our Approach

When the shoulder is immobilized after shoulder surgery it becomes tight. As the patient begins rehabilitation they may over-recruit the incorrect muscles in an attempt to move the shoulder and arm.

While typical physical therapy strategies include mobilization, ice, heat, muscle stimulation, and exercises they can fall short in addressing the soft tissue components that are central to full recovery.

Post-surgical adhesions are rarely appreciated or treated correctly. All structures that contribute to the movement of the shoulder must be considered and included in shoulder surgery rehab including the cervical spine, the thoracic spine, the scapula, the rotator cuff, and the ribcage.

Our doctors expertly integrate manual therapies such as trigger point therapy, Graston Technique®, Active Release Technique®, and Fascial manipulation to improve soft tissues function and movement. Optimal results can be achieved when these treatments are performed in conjunction with the patient’s physical therapy regimen.
